After Elon Musk took over Twitter, there have been some layoffs worldwide. Over 50% of its employees have been fired and the most affected ones are the Indian employees. There were over 200 employees working for Twitter in India and now only a dozen of them are left. In fact, the employees even took it to Twitter that they has been fired. How did Layoffs happen?
On November 4, Elon Musk sent out an email globally that said, “In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday.” The employees also did a memo informing about their layoffs, “Given the nature of our distributed workforce and our desire to inform impacted individuals as quickly as possible, communications for this process will take place via email. By 9 AM PST on Friday, Nov. 4th, everyone will receive an individual email with the subject line: Your Role at Twitter. Please check your email, including your spam folder.”
In addition, employees were told that “if your employment is not impacted, you will receive a notification via your Twitter email. If your employment is impacted, you will receive a notification with the next steps via your personal email.” Previously, the Twitter workforce included 7,500 employees globally. But reports suggest that Musk has plans to get rid of almost 50% of them.
Now the company has about 3,700 employees remaining globally. And Musk is pushing those who remain to work quickly to ship in new features. In some cases, employees have even slept at the office to meet new deadlines.
Twitter Employees let go in India
According to reports, entire teams have been sacked in this mass termination. And Musk plans to close Twitter offices globally in preparation for the layoff. A huge number of employees have been fired including the teams of communication, marketing, sales, engineering, and many others. Moreover, high-ranking executives including CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and policy head Vijay Gadde were let go as well.
Yash Agrawal, who was part of the public policy team tweeted, “Just got laid off. Bird App, it was an absolute honor, the greatest privilege ever to be a part of this team, this culture.” Also, a report by PTI quotes a Twitter employee who confirms that layoffs have started in team India. “Layoffs have started. Some of my colleagues have received an email notification regarding this.”, an employee told the reporter. The report also shares that a ‘significant chunk’ of India’s team has been laid off.
Twitter’s India offices are located in New Delhi, the financial capital of Mumbai, and the southern tech hub of Bengaluru.
